With 145 stores situated over two levels, Trade Route Mall has set the standard with an industry-first renewable energy solution that offers monthly cost savings and protection against power outages.
Looking for sustainable power
A key part of the mall’s growth journey was implementing a renewable energy solution that could provide its tenants with power security while relieving pressure off the local grid.
Trade Route Mall partnered with SolarAfrica for a two-phased approach.
Phase 1 consisted of installing 3.6 MW of solar to kickstart Trade Route Mall’s green energy journey.
Phase 2 included an 11 MWh Sungrow PowerTitan battery – the largest of its kind for a retail application in Africa and a continent-first – together with 3.6 MW in additional solar.
The bespoke solar carport structure was the largest of its kind at the time and offers shaded parking to shoppers while generating clean, green energy.
As a combined Power Purchase Agreement, battery lease, and roof rental option, the mall could enjoy monthly cost savings without upfront capital investment.
Today the mall can benefit from a unique mix of solar, batter and grid energy to power their entire complex.
