We will offer trading under Energy Market SA (EMSA), a subsidiary of SolarAfrica.
Energy trading allows businesses to buy diverse sources of energy from licensed traders, who in turn procure it from Independent Power Producers. This energy can be generated from utility-scale solar, wind or hydro projects, with the traders making renewable energy available to businesses – that typically can’t directly buy electricity from large-scale providers – through electricity Wheeling. The benefits of an energy trading licence go far beyond expanding SolarAfrica’s suite of virtual solutions. EMSA will play a pivotal role for businesses that are not able to provide large guarantees to procure energy at scale, or those who require more flexible contract terms when signing up for virtual renewable energy solutions.
Our mission is simple: to make renewable energy accessible and affordable to businesses that are at the heart of South Africa’s economy. As a licensed energy trader, we will be in a strong position to make renewable energy advancements in power Wheeling available to businesses that could not benefit from this kind of innovation before.
Renewable energy trading forms part of our Electricity 2.0 offering: a virtual power solutions suite that offers businesses the choice of where they buy their electricity from. Commercial and industrial users can now choose where they buy their electricity from by adding virtual solutions like Wheeling and trading to the mix – allowing them to get cheaper electricity rates while bringing more green energy into their business. By layering this on top of on-site solutions like solar and batteries, and traditional sources like Eskom, they can truly maximise value from the electricity they use while moving ahead on their sustainability journey.
Partnering with reputable energy providers, we can trade energy across South Africa to promote access to cleaner, greener and more affordable power solutions.
As a subsidiary of SolarAfrica, EMSA can leverage our existing footprint and relationships in the South African market so that it procures energy from reputable Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and offers this as a commercial energy solution to businesses. This will ensure that credible and sustainable trading agreements are in place, giving peace of mind to off-takers.
EMSA will also have access to our range of utility-scale projects, including our flagship 1 GW SunCentral solar farm in De Aar – further ensuring the security of energy supply.
