This collaboration saw 15 female learners from JB Matabane Secondary School visit SolarAfrica’s head office in Irene for an engaging full-day programme focused on STEM education and solar technology. By exposing young women to real-world applications of renewable energy and coding, the initiative sought to demystify the clean energy sector while encouraging careers in tech and engineering. It also marked a significant step towards two of the Sustainable Development Goals our business has prioritised for 2025: Quality Education and Gender Equality.
The day began with a warm welcome and breakfast hosted by SolarAfrica’s Business Support Manager, Lorrel Singh and Zinhle Vilakazi from GirlCode. Both set the tone for the day, highlighting the value of partnerships that invest in youth empowerment and education initiatives.
Learners were then treated to insightful talks from two of SolarAfrica’s powerhouses: Nicolette Hartley, Head Product Owner in our Technology Department, and Michelle Joubert, Engineering Manager. Nicolette shared her journey into the world of tech, while Michelle spoke about her path into engineering – offering honest perspectives on the challenges and rewards of building a career in traditionally male-dominated sectors. Their stories demonstrated the importance of mentorship and representation in shaping the next generation of women in tech.
One of the highlights of the day was the Robotics and Coding programme, a hands-on session that allowed learners to build, programme and explore the basics of automation. By connecting technology skills with practical applications in renewable energy and solar power, the workshop opened new pathways for the students – many of whom had never interacted with such tools before.
At SolarAfrica, we believe that education is the most powerful driver of change, and that the future belongs to young innovators who are equipped with the tools to shape it. Through this partnership with GirlCode, we aim to help bridge the gender gap in STEM and solar education. Initiatives like this form part of our broader CSR strategy, which champions youth development, gender equality and energy awareness across South Africa.
As we continue to lead in solar training, clean energy innovation and sustainable energy solutions, we remain committed to building a future that is not only greener, but also more inclusive.
We extend our thanks to JB Matabane Secondary School for their enthusiastic participation, and to GirlCode for partnering with us.
Here’s to nurturing more young female coders, tech leaders and energy trailblazers!
